Two members of the Firetools team attended the conference Fire and Materials to present their current work.
Konrad presented his paper Obtaining Additional Smoke Characteristics Using Multi-Wavelength Light Transmission Measurements Frida presented Challenges in Determining Critical Mass Flux for Ignition.
In addition, here is a review of some interesting presentations:
Day 1 –
Anja Hofmann, discusses the risks of bins at the front of buildings with regards to combustible facade insulation.
Per Blomquist, talks about the fire safety of textile membranes (eg large tents), apparently there aren’t many regulations regarding these structures.
CL Chow, from Hong Kong discusses the dangers of PV panels with regards to fire safety, especially when they are used in the facade of “green” buildings. Babrauskas also made a comment on this regarding rooftop panels, and the safety of the fire brigade trying to put these fires out.
Day 2 –
People from FM were discussing the testing of wall panel systems, and introduced a new FM test procedure for cavity wall insulation
Thermo-mechanical behaviour of panels used in shipping exposed to an ISO 834 curve was studied
Marc Janssens discusses the challenges in predicting pyrolysis rate of solid materials
And some people from NIST and DuPont have been attempting to model the ISO radiant floor panel test using FDS
Day 3 –
Discussions on the fire safety of furniture foam and mattresses were had in the first session.
Some guys from Maryland also introduced a new test apparatus similar to the micro combustion calorimeter that sounds pretty interesting. Named the milligram scale calorimeter
Our friend Dan from lund also presented his master thesis work of the fire properties of borated polyethylene.
Marcello Hirschler gave us a quick overview of the effects of flame retardants on polymers heat release rates
